Reduce repeated interface chrome before reducing information

A busy Reddit page often feels noisy because the same visual weight is assigned to primary content, navigation, metadata, badges, and secondary recommendations. A clean theme can lower that noise without deleting meaning. Titles stay prominent, community and author remain available, and votes and comments keep recognizable positions. Borders, backgrounds, and icons become quieter so the user can scan the actual discussion instead of repeatedly parsing the container around it.

Compact density should follow the same principle. It reduces large gaps and padding but does not make text tiny or tap targets impossible to reach. Set a readable width for posts and comments

Desktop Reddit can leave the main column narrow on a large display, especially when multiple side modules are visible. A clean view can reduce the sidebar and give the discussion more space, but prose should still have a maximum line length. The theme needs separate decisions for feed scanning, post reading, media, and nested comments. One width value applied everywhere usually makes at least one of those modes worse.

Keep the mode compatible with ordinary Reddit actions

A clean reading mode still needs to support opening posts, expanding media, voting, replying, saving, sharing, and navigating communities. SiteSkin does not replace these actions. It styles the current interface and hides only the optional regions represented by feature switches. The extension does not send votes, write comments, or access moderation tools on the user’s behalf. Those actions remain controlled by Reddit and the signed-in account.

Because the change is local, it can be tested without committing to a permanent account preference. Users can compare Newsroom and Blueprint, preview a private variation, or disable the skin from the popup. If Reddit changes its page structure, the official adapter can be updated independently from the theme palette. That separation is particularly valuable on a site where feed and comment layouts evolve at different speeds.

Test a clean Reddit view across different community formats

A useful test starts with a mixed home feed and continues into several communities. Compare text posts, external links, image galleries, video, polls, pinned posts, promoted modules, community announcements, and spoiler-marked content. The clean treatment should keep author, community, time, vote state, comment activity, flair, and destination recognizable while lowering the weight of repeated borders and secondary chrome. Then open a long discussion containing quoted passages, code, moderator labels, collapsed branches, deleted comments, and deeply nested replies. Indentation must explain the relationship between comments without consuming the entire reading width, and actions such as vote, reply, save, share, report, and collapse should stay easy to locate.

Also inspect search results, community information, user profiles, notifications, menus, settings, and confirmation dialogs at narrow and wide sizes. Compact density should increase useful information per screen without reducing body text or focus targets below a comfortable level. A reduced sidebar should give the discussion room while retaining a reliable path back to navigation. Compare the same task with the skin paused, then restore it from the extension rather than modifying Reddit preferences. If a page update causes a hidden control, merged comment level, or unreadable status, the original presentation remains available immediately. The goal is to clean Reddit for scanning and sustained reading while preserving the social and moderation context that lets a reader interpret what is on the page.
